Artist Statement

Lisa O'Brien - artKnot ArtistMy work this year has been inspired by film. In particular film and images that have leaned toward the genre of fantasy, for example Pan’s Labyrinth (directed by Guillermo del Toro) and The Corpse Bride (by Tim Burton). I have also looked at Hitchcock and painter Edward Hopper both of whom are noted for creating tension and an individual tone to their respective media.

The work of the tenebrists has been an influence also, these include Caravaggio and Rembrandt. Within this play on light and dark I have created works that evoke a mood and a specific atmosphere.

Like the artists named above, I too, have played with the notion of scale. I hope to create a large scale hanging that will dwarf the viewer and lead them into a surreal world that is ill at ease.

My research consists of experimentation with miniatures, set design, photography and painting to create a world that reflects my feelings on being at odds with myself and the moving through the space of life. I have created an androgynous character that navigates the strange and eerie landscape searching for answers and ultimately…wisdom.

I have an interest in set design and Art direction. I would hope to continue my education next year and explore more deeply, the area of set design for theatre and film. The aim of this is work is to create a piece that will be at home in a gallery or exhibition environment. My exhibition will include, 3D fabric pieces, The instillation may also include video and /or audio.

tenebroso or tenebrism - Tenebroso is an Italian word, literally meaning dark and gloomy. Both tenebroso and its English equivalent, tenebrism, refer to a style of painting characterized by high contrast between light and shade -- emphasis placed on chiaroscuro to achieve dark, dramatic effects. Frequently the main subjects of tenebrist pictures are illuminated by a single source of light, as if a spotlight shone upon them, leaving other areas in darkness. Such pictures have been called "night pictures" painted in the "dark manner." The most reknowned tenebrists have been "Caravaggio", Michelangelo Merisi (Italian, 1571/73-1610), Georges De La Tour (French, 1593-1652), and Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669).
