On graduating from GMIT, Galway, in 2000 with a diploma in sculpture, my interest in photography has lead me in the direction of digital enhancement whereby a simple photographic image may be transformed into something quite abstract. The images which I based on the design of my fingerprint tore away from what I was was used to producing, but I felt it was important to explore other areas.I have always had a fervent interest in portraiture using a variety of media; throughout the past few years, I have been using photography and digital enhancement to express this interest, but gradually I am beginning to incline towards other media, namely pencil, charcoal and acrylic. As regards style, my previous photographic work has contained an element of pop-art which, to a certain degree I would like to maintain within my future work. Having said this, therein lies a great need to retain a traditionally sculptural quality to my paintings. However, as every artist might know, styles have the potential to evolve and even change quite drastically!
I have been a member of artKnot since its foundation in 2002. The confidence it has given me to promote my work on a wider scale has been incredibly rewarding. Through my own study, my wish is to develop my skills in portraiture and, with the accumulation of work, to hold solo exhibitions nationwide as well as on the international stage!
One of my influences has been the life and work of the Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. Her life having been marred by tragedy, Kahlo's work, particularly her self portraits, exuded great strength and courage. I wish for my current and future work to include these qualities.
